Position Summary:

Subject matter expertise to support the computerized coding software that utilizes state-of-the-art Natural Language Processing (NLP), to ensure high quality ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT/HCPCS code assignment.  This position requires strong organizational skills.  As CAC progresses, this individual will be part of a working team of certified medical coding professionals.  This is the team that will work in conjunction with the product development team and works closely with NLP and software engineering staff.

Essential Functions:

  • Analyzes coded data and clinician documentation to provide relevant feedback to the software engineers to update/enhance the coding engine.
  • Applies national standards of coding principles and guidelines in reviewing the code assignments.
  • Applies knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology in reviewing the code assignments.
  • Acts as a resource for coding questions and related issues internally.
  • Develops innovative approaches and ideas; displays original thinking and creativity.
  • Completes all tasks accurately and timely.
  • Ability to perform duties under minimal supervision.
  • Maintains all coding certifications and CEUs.

  • Education:
    • Requires Community College degree or certificate.
    • CCS, CCS-P, CPC, CPC-H, RHIT, or RHIA  current accreditation.
  • Work Experience:
    • Minimum 5 years medical coding and billing experience required. 
    • Strong working knowledge of inpatient and outpatient hospital coding and billing.
    • Experience in coding of multiple outpatient specialties is required, such as radiology, emergency medicine, and same-day surgery.
    • Strong working knowledge of physician/professional coding and billing for both inpatient and outpatient settings.
    • Strong working knowledge of Evaluation and Management assignment, facility and professional.
  • Other Skills / Experience:
    • A demonstrated ability to handle a variety of tasks is crucial.
    • A working knowledge of healthcare, hospital, physician, billing companies, medical record coding and auditing.
    • Strong written and oral communication skills.
